Epsom's first game was against a London Wayfarers side who beat them twice last year en route to relegation. Wayfarers play a disciplined, patient brand of hockey, and in hot conditions and on a sticky pitch the game was tight and attritional, with few clear cut chances at either end.

After a short break Epsom played the tournaments third side Cheam. The winner of this game would join Wayfarers in the next round but with conditions still hot, and weary limbs on both sides, there was a distinct lack of enthusiasm in both teams preparations.

This was a significant game for two sides who are both ambitious to be towards the upper echelons of the league this season. Reigate finished second last season, and with the home side possessing a strong midfield and set piece, Epsom management Rob Tong and Immy Bhatti called for a slick tempo and retention of possession.

Epsom opened their pre season fixtures with a win at Purley Walcountians. Both sides were fielding more or less scratch line ups, but the traditions of both clubs run strong and the fixture was still hotly contested.
